YORKTOWN HEIGHTS – The month of February is American Heart Month.  Last Friday, Yorktown officials and staff went red for National Wear Red Day as part of an effort to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease.

Yorktown Supervisor Matt Slater said, “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.  It was great to see so many of our staff help turn Town Hall red and participate in National Wear Red Day as part of a national advocacy effort to raise awareness and educate people about heart disease.  A special thank you to State Assemblyman Kevin Byrne for joining us and sharing important information about ways to get and stay healthy.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States.
  • One person dies every 37 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease.

  •  About 1 in 5 heart attacks is silent—the damage is done, but the person is not aware of it.
