WHITE PLAINS – Westchester County Executive George Latimer, Wednesday, proposed local legislation that would require electric charging stations at parking garages and open parking lots owned by the county.

His proposal would require charging stations to be installed in newly constructed or reconstructed parking garages and open parking lots owned by the county, and in certain cases, receiving county funding.

Latimer noted the number of charging stations for all-electric or hybrid-electric vehicles is lagging behind traditional fueling opportunities. “For those of us who drive our automobiles everywhere here in suburbia, if we run our cars on traditional gasoline we know that we have an infrastructure of service stations that are all over the county and that at some point in time even if we are in a distant part of the county not our normal routine, and if we run low on gas, there is a place we can go to make sure we have enough fuel so that we can complete our journey and get home,” he said. “For those who are driving electric vehicles, be they hybrid or fully electric, that infrastructure is not yet in place around this county.”

Latimer announced his latest sustainable energy plan at the North White Plains train station where he said 10 new electric charging stations have been installed.
