Newburgh police say convicted felon had a gun

NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh police have arrested an 18-year-old for Criminal Possession of a Weapon and resisting arrest stemming from an incident that occurred on February 2, 2020.

On February 2, shortly before 9:00 AM, officers patrolling the heights and noticed a group of males on the corner of S. Lander Street and Overlook.  When officers approached, one of the males began walking away while holding his waistband.  As the officers attempted to speak with him, the young man fled on foot.  The pursing officers observed the fleeing suspect throw an item, believed to be a gun, over a fence, according to police officials.

The fleeing male was apprehended by police after a short pursuit.  Police Officer Layne and his Explosive Detection K-9 Dutch were able to recover a loaded .22 caliber revolver near where the officers had witnessed the suspect throw an item.

The suspect, Savion Knight, was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a felony in New York along with the Misdemeanor charge of Resisting Arrest.  Knight is currently on parole in New York for Robbery in the Third Degree and is being held on a Violation of Parole warrant.
