Hit-and-run victim’s family and public officials call for action on killer’s release

STONY POINT – A rally was held on Sunday calling for justice for the death of Rosie Osai, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident by illegal immigrant Jorge Flores-Villabla on the corner of 9W and Filors on Christmas Eve. The rally was led by Assemblyman Colin  Schmitt, Town Supervisor James Monaghan, and Osai’s family and friends.

The alleged perpetrator did not have a license while operating the vehicle and was released without bail due to recent changes in New York State criminal justice laws.

“As I stand here surrounded by Rosie’s family and friends, I am heartbroken and angered,” Schmitt said. “The Governor and Democrats in the state legislature have caused this injustice and allowed Rosie’s killer to walk free.” Schmitt also stated that Flores-Villabla confessed to the crime and to being in the United States illegally. He plans to call for a repeal on the killer’s release.

The victim’s cousin, Sheila Harris, had tears in her eyes as she spoke. “Every day, it’s a constant reminder that she’s not here anymore, and the pain starts all over again,” Harris said. “Once I get past this pain and remember her face, it’ll be nothing but a smile.”

Monaghan also stated that there was no input from police and no consideration as to how the recent bail reform would affect the state’s citizens and communities. He, along with the others who spoke at the rally, are driven to take action in Albany.

As stated by Osai’s former partner, Michael Peragine, Flores-Villabla’s next court date is scheduled for January 9. A memorial was erected on the corner of 9W and Filors where the victim was killed.
