WASHINGTON – All four Democratic area House members voted for the impeachment of President Trump Wednesday evening.

Elliott Engel (D, NY-16), Nita Lowey (D, NY-17), Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY-18) and Antonio Delgado (D, NY-19) all cast votes to impeach.

Lowey, who is retiring at the end of the current term, said she supported impeachment because “the president sought foreign assistance to influence the 2020 presidential election and went to great lengths to obstruct Congress during the investigations.”

She said Trump “is not fit to serve as president. Make no mistake. Republicans turning a blind eye to the president’s misdeeds won’t hide the threats of his actions to our democracy.”

Maloney said “There is clear and convincing evidence that President Trump used taxpayer money and official acts to pressure a foreign government to help him win re-election by slandering a fellow American. These actions are unworthy of the presidency.”

NewYork State Bar Association President Hank Greenberg issued a statement regarding the impeachment process, saying “The senators who sit in judgment of the president bear an awesome responsibility. There are few — if any — weightier matters in our constitutional scheme of government than the potential removal of a president.”  Greenberg added, “The impeachment process was not intended to be a purely political exercise.   The coming trial is an extraordinarily solemn and sober proceeding that should be determined in accordance with the facts and applicable law.”

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney: “clear and convincing evidence”

Not everyone sees the vote the way the Democrats did.

Michael McAdams, the spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the votes by Maloney and Delgado “destroy any chance (they have) for reelection and shows New York voters (they) exactly like the rest of the socialist Democrats.”

Now that the ball is in the Senate’s court, Democratic New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said, “The facts laid out by the House are disturbing.”

She said she will enter the proceedings “with one purpose: to find the truth and deliver justice.”
