GOSHEN – The City of Newburgh is not alone as it struggles to balance its books
with police and fire layoffs going into 2020. Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus has suggested forming a local municipal advisory board to assist the city.

He envisions an outside review board of professionals who have faced tough times in their own local governments.

“Gary Spears, the supervisor of Deerpark had to manage a town that was in serious financial problems. Joe DeStefano, the mayor of Middletown, had similar challenges and they both successfully turned their communities around and there are a number of other men and women that I think would be helpful to the city council and to the manager to make difficult decisions,” he said. “It’s not just getting through this budget cycle; we need to have a long, sustainable forecast for stability in Newburgh.”

Neuhaus said if not people will not want to live, invest or work in the City of Newburgh.
