Saugerties man charged in machete attack

SAUGERTIES – Police in Saugerties have arrested a 35-year-old local man on charges of armed assault and criminal possession of a weapon following an incident Wednesday night.

Police were called to 1 Clermont Street in the Village of Saugerties for a report of a man who had been attacked with a machete. Officers found a 25-year-old man bleeding profusely after having suffered several lacerations to his arms and legs in addition to three partially amputated fingers.

Witnesses identified the machete attacker as Anthony Cunningham, a tenant from the same apartment building as the victim. Cunningham had fled the scene before officers arrived.

State Police and Ulster County Sheriff’s deputies assisted Saugerties Police and around 90 minutes later a Saugerties K-9 unit located Cunningham on West Bridge Street. He was taken into custody, arraigned and remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bail or $250,000 bond.

The victim was treated at the scene by Diaz Ambulance and transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie for his injuries, which were severe in nature, police said. He was listed in stable condition.

Cunningham was charged with armed assault, burglary and criminal possession of a weapon.
