GOSHEN – A New Paltz man, who was working in a 6,000 gallon underground gasoline tank at a defunct Mobil gas station on Route 207 in the Village of Goshen Wednesday afternoon, was rescued from the tank after he went unconscious.

Goshen Village Police Chief James Watt said the man, whose name was not immediately released, had apparently gone into the old tank through hole cut in it.

Firefighters had to cut another hole in the tank and pull the man to safety.

He was rushed to Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill where Watt said he was listed in stable condition. Authorities suspect he was overcome by gasoline fumes in the old tank.
