GOSHEN – Retired Orange County Historian Ted Sly died last Thursday. He was 88.

County Executive Steven Neuhaus said Sly “cared deeply about Orange County’s rich history and was a fixture in the historical community.”

Neuhaus said Sly “particularly enjoyed teaching school children throughout the region about Orange County’s history.”

Sly, a US Army veteran, was county historian for 24 years, retiring in 2011. He previously taught in the Minisink Valley School District for 32 years.

“Ted remained actively involved with the historian’s office after his retirement, appearing at the 1841 Courthouse as a guest at public history events,” said current County Historian Johanna Yaun.

The newly renovated media room in the 1841 Courthouse will be dedicated in Sly’s name on Friday, November 1.

For many, many years, way before cell phone video, Sly would attend meetings and events and videotape them for archival purposes.
