Missing hiker found dead in Town of Hunter

HUNTER – A missing 50-year-old man, who had planned to hike down from Platte Clove to Plattekill Creek, camp and then hike through to meet a friend at Saugerties Bridge on Becker Road in the Town of Hunter, was found dead by state environmental conservation officers.

At 4 p.m. on October 6, forest rangers began a search of Plattekill Creek after being notified that he was missing.

At 7:33 p.m., forest rangers found the man dead in the Town of Hunter about 1 ¼ miles upstream from Becker Road.

The scene was secured overnight and on October 7 at 6 a.m., forest rangers recovered the man using a technical rope system and involving multiple high and steep angle rope systems over a course of 700 feet of elevation.

Seventeen forest rangers completed the recovery and turned the body over to the coroner.
