Former Rye mayor Carey dies

RYE – The funeral service for former Rye Mayor John Carey will be held on Saturday, October 12.

Carey, who was a law professor and for 25 years was a US-appointed United Nations Human Rights Sub-Commission delegate, was 97 at the time he passed away on Monday, October 7.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said Carey “lived a long life of dedication to public service, good governance and to the place that we both called home.”

“John came before me on the Rye City Council and was an outstanding mayor, but through it all he always stayed true to his mission to honorably serve in public office,” Latimer said.

The wake will be at Graham Funeral Home in Rye, on Friday afternoon and evening, October 11, and the funeral on October 12 at 10 a.m., All Souls Parish, Port Chester.

The City of Rye and the county have lowered their flags to half-staff in Carey’s memory.
