NEW YORK – A 33-year-old officer with the NYPD was shot and killed early Sunday morning in the Bronx by a man who was later shot and killed by other officers.

On body-worn camera video, Brian Mulkeen can be heard yelling, “He’s reaching for it – he’s reaching for it.” Gunshots rang out and the officer was struck three times. He died at a hospital.

Police brass identified the officer as Brian Mulkeen, a 6 1/2 year veteran on the force. He lived in Yorktown Heights with his girlfriend.

The suspect, who was 27, was on probation for a narcotics offense and a burglary in Rockland County.

“Brian was a great cop dedicate to keeping this city safe,” said Chief of Department Terrance Monahan. “In fact, just last night he arrested a man in possession of a gun in the very same precinct.”
