Man shot, two arrested on gun possession charges

NEWBURGH – A 23-year-old Newburgh man is recuperating after being shot in the hip Wednesday night in the area of Benkard Avenue and William Street in the City of Newburgh.

Darius Lee was driven to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in a private vehicle. He was uncooperative with investigators during his initial interview at the hospital.

At the same time, police received a report of a man with a gun near 111 West Parmenter Street. When the officers got there, several men fled. One was apprehended in front of that address and another was apprehended in a first-floor apartment.

A search warrant was obtained and officers found four firearms inside 111 West Parmenter, including a .32 caliber revolver; a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun; a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun; and a shotgun.

Both men arrested are identified as Newburgh city residents Giovanni Alvarez, 18, and Terrance Melvin, 18. Alvarez was charged with false personation and criminal possession of a loaded firearm. Melvin was charged with obstructing governmental administration and criminal possession of a loaded firearm.

The investigation into the shooting of Lee is being handled by the police department’s Non-Fatal Shooting task force.
