MONTICELLO – They showed up everywhere in the months prior to the Woodstock Anniversary Weekend.  They are not going away.

They are the 50 colorful hand-painted doves, standing about five feet tall and weighing a few hundred pounds. They can be found throughout the county on the Sullivan County Dove Trail.

The county’s director of communications, Dan Hust, told the county legislature’s Economic Development Committee they saw the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music Fest as an opportunity to create a new identity for Sullivan County.

“It was not just for Woodstock 50; that was the catalyst. They are meant to be permanent and to not only defining and identify the communities in which they are located and the organizations with which they are affiliated, but the county as a whole.”

Hust said what endured after the peaceful four-day event is solidifying that image.

“The idea is this is the land of peace, love and doves.  While that sounds corny, it really resonates with folks.”

Hust said they believe they have finally “hit the jackpot” with a brand that is unique to Sullivan County, setting it apart from the other Catskill region counties.
