ALBANY – Republican State Assemblyman Karl Brabenec (R, Deerpark) has written to President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr asking them to investigate the legality of New York’s recently adopted Green Light bill that will allow illegal immigrants to secure driver’s licenses.

Brabenec, who voted against the measure, called it “a concerning step.”

In his letter to the president, the lawmaker said that many county clerks “are voicing their concern that adhering to this law will violate their oaths of office.”

He has asked the president and attorney general to “initiative an immediate review of the law, and render an opinion whether this legislation, including the process by which some important identification safeguards have been removed, should be reviewed in federal court.”

Brabenec said the law “is in conflict with the United States Immigration Law” and he urged Trump to exercise “strong and steady leadership” on this issue.
