WHITE PLAINS – A White Plains woman has been arrested after she threw her cat named “Cotton” down a trash chute from the 19th floor of her apartment building at 25 Bank Street in White Plains.

Romy Goldsmith Shapiro, 40, was charged with animal cruelty and abandonment of a cat.

The black and white cat, which was inside a black plastic bag, was discovered 20 minutes later in the trash compactor 20 stories below in the basement.

Fortunately for Cotton, maintenance workers heard noises coming from the plastic bag, cut it open and found the feline inside. She was taken to a local animal hospital for care.

Meanwhile, the SPCA of Westchester’s Humane Law Enforcement Unit investigated with White Plains Police and arrested Shapiro following the June 12 incident.

“It’s hard to imagine such a senseless act of cruelty,” said SPCA Executive Director Shannon Laukhuf.
