BREWSTER – Dozens of people lined Brewster’s Main Street to pay their respects to George Godfrey, a 65 year member of the Brewster Fire Department, Korean War veteran and who for decades greeted commuters at the Brewster Metro-North Railroad station each day while placing American flags on a fence surrounding the station on the village’s Main Street.

Brewster Mayor Jim Schoenig recalled the 91-year-old Godfrey as a “true American hero who deserved the title of ‘Brewster’s Unofficial Mayor.”

Former Putnam Commissioner of Emergency Services and ex-Brewster Fire Chief Ken Clair remembered Godfrey as a “pillar of the Brewster Fire Department.”

Godfrey joined the volunteer fire service in 1959 and quickly rose through the ranks to become captain of the Fire-Police Company, also serving for more than 25 years as financial secretary.

The Brewster Fire Department took its brother on a final ride through the village Saturday afternoon – a community that he loved, before bringing him to his final resting place following the funeral.
