HYDE PARK – A FD Roosevelt High School student was killed in a crash on South Quaker Lane in Hyde Park on Wednesday, around noontime.  His front seat passenger was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital in critical condition while two back seat passengers sustained lesser injuries, police said.

The names of the victims are being withheld because of the sensitive and emotional nature of the incident, police said.

Sheriff’s Captain John Watterson said the vehicle struck a utility pole when the driver lost control.  The pole was snapped in half, causing downed wires in the area of the crash.  The primary factor in the crash appears to be unsafe speed; however, the investigation is continuing, he said.

The students were believed to be traveling from the high school to BOCES in the Town of Hyde Park, Watterson said.

First responders from the Pleasant Valley and Roosevelt fire departments were needed to extricate two of the four passengers that were in the pickup truck.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the accident.
