POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Court Judge Edward McLoughlin has sent a convicted felon back to prison following a jury conviction of gun and criminal impersonation charges in February.  Thirty-six-year-old Marc Coleman, with at least 13 prior convictions as well as time in prison and a revocation of his parole, was sentenced to 13 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision on Monday.

Prior to the sentencing, the defendant’s attorney, Steven Patterson told the court that “My client maintains his innocence.”

Coleman is still facing a trial next week on six drug charges for which he was indicted.  The drug charges date back to July 2020.

Before meting out the sentence, Judge McLoughlin announced the charges and convictions of the 13 previous cases and cited the pre-sentence report which was prepared by the Dutchess County Probation Department.  The report, according to the judge, recalls an incident where Coleman was holding a two-month-old child while he struck the baby’s mother with a soiled diaper, knocked her to the ground, punched her, and again rubbed the soiled diaper in her face.  “This gives us a sense of Mr. Coleman beyond his criminal convictions.”

Turning to the defendant, McLoughlin said, “All things considered, you are a dangerous person and none of this has led to you changing your way, and it’s a shame, because clearly you are an intelligent person.”

The criminal trial for the seven drug charges in the indictment is slated to begin next week before Judge McLoughlin.
