ESOPUS – The US Department of Energy has awarded $3.4 million to Central Hudson Gas and Electric to be applied toward a turbine replacement and generator rehabilitation project for units one and two at Dashville Hydroelectric plant in the Town of Esopus.

Utility company spokesman Joseph Jenkins said the upgrades are vital t the facility located on the Wallkill River.

“This is important because at a time when energy supply prices remain volatile, these upgrades allow this hydroelectric facility to more efficiently produce up to 5.3 megawatts of emission-free electricity and what that does, that directly reduces the amount of power that we have to purchase on behalf of our customers,” he said.

The total price tag for the project is $11.35 million with the remainder built into the customer rates over many years, said Jenkins.
