MID-HUDSON – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a “Tornado Watch” for the Hudson Valley counties of Putnam and Westchester for Sunday. Nassau and Suffolk counties have been included in Tornado Watch 497.
The Watch is in effect until 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2023.
A Tornado Watch is a notification by the NWS to “Be prepared”. Tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Residents in the watch and surrounding areas are advised to review and discuss their emergency plans and check supplies and their safe room. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching. Acting early helps to save lives!
National Weather Service Watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center for counties where tornadoes may occur. The watch area is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.
The Tornado Watch coincides with the Flood Watch issued by the NWS for Sunday and Monday. Periods of heavy rain on Sunday through Monday are likely to create flooding in the areas already affected by the previous storms.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected across the watch area Sunday. Multiple rounds of showers, including thunderstorms, remain likely today. On average, rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches can be expected, with localized amounts of 4 to 6 inches possible.
Localized significant flooding remains likely in areas where the heaviest rainfall occurs.
