ALBANY – Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) passed two bills on Tuesday, enabling the cities of Beacon (A06556) and Poughkeepsie (A06555) to collect a hotel-motel tax of up to five percent. The legislation also includes Airbnb’s and bed and breakfasts.

“Airbnb’s are popping up across the Hudson Valley. This tax gives the cities of Beacon and Poughkeepsie the option of collecting a local tax of up to five percent to help offset the costs of supporting these businesses.”

The lawmaker said he previously passed similar legislation for the City and Town of Newburgh. “The benefit of this tax is that it is almost exclusively paid by visitors rather than area residents,” Jacobson said.

The bills now await passage in the Senate, where they are sponsored by Senator Rob Rolison (R, Poughkeepsie).
