BEACON – The City of Beacon’s new $14 million central firehouse, to replace the current 20-year-old facility, will be under construction shortly.

City officials Monday evening ceremonially broke ground for the new facility to be constructed in the same location as the old one.

Mayor Lee Kyriacou said Dutchess County sales tax will help pay for the state-of-the-art facility.

“The last piece of the puzzle was getting the sales tax deal with the county put in place, which has given us an extra $1 million in revenue in the first year and $20 million over 10 years and that my itself runs this firehouse, although we’re putting it to multiple uses,” he said. “But getting the funding in place gets me really comfortable that not only can we provide safety through our fire prevention and a central station, but we can also do it without raising taxes too dramatically.”

The new two-story firehouse will accommodate the city’s fire apparatus plus a contract ambulance.

The department is comprised of paid career firefighters and volunteers.
