Monticello man charged with animal cruelty for slamming dog against pavement

MONTICELLO – A pit bull dog is being treated for serious injuries after a Monticello man was observed by a local police officer as he aggressively slammed a female pit bull against the pavement and then stomped on the dog.

The animal was transported by Monticello Police to a local veterinary office for treatment of injuries.

The alleged perpetrator, identified by police as Samuel Stanford, 24, was charged with the felony of aggravated cruelty to an animal and issued an appearance ticket to return to village court.

The incident occurred around 5:50 a.m. on May 31 when police received several calls reporting a dog crying in distress in the area of Landfield Avenue and North Street.

Police Officer Darius Buckner observed Stanford in the rear of 27 North Street as he assaulted the dog. The officer immediately arrested Stanford.
