Ulster County is waiving exam fees.

KINGSTON – If you are going to apply for a government job in Ulster County from now on, you won’t have to pay an exam fee.

The county is waiving those charges for prospective county workers.

State law requires civil service applicants to pass tests in order to be considered for the competitive positions for which they are applying, and pay costs associated with taking the test.

Fees in Ulster County typically ranged from $20 to $40 per exam.

“Our greatest asset in Ulster County is our people, and qualified candidates should be able to apply for positions in county government without paying a fee,” said County Executive Jen Metzger. “Eliminating civil service exam fees promotes fair and equitable opportunities for positions in public services, regardless of means, and will encourage more qualified candidates to apply.”

County Personnel Director Dawn Spader called the waiving of fees “an important step in breaking down barriers to employment that we have control over.”
