KINGSTON – This year is the 75th anniversary of the Kingston Housing Authority, and Wednesday a ceremony was conducted to rename the Stuyvesant Apartments as the Leonard and Vera Van Dyke Apartments.

“As part of the redevelopment of the site, the housing authority board thought about the opportunity for us to also consider a name change,” said Mayor Steve Noble, who spoke at the ceremony.

“Peter Stuyvesant was a slave owner in the Hudson Valley, so this was an opportunity for the board to honor two individuals who really dedicated their entire life to civil rights and anti-racism. It’s really great to take these two leaders and be able to have apartments named after them.”

About a month ago a $50 million redevelopment project started at the complex at Sheehan Court, and the renaming is part of the project. Rondout Gardens, Wiltwyck Gardens and Colonial Gardens Addition will also benefit from the $50 million project, which will cover a total of 441 units within the Kingston Housing Authority.
