Kingston PD arrests Esopus man on gun possession charges

KINGSTON – Police in the City of Kingston have arrested an Esopus man on weapons possession and other charges following a traffic stop on Sunday, May 28.

Jahed George Reid, 20, was stopped driving a 2014 Mercedes on Mary’s Avenue near Andrews Street. He was driving at about 1 a.m. without headlights, had no front license plate and a covered rear plate.

The vehicle was occupied by three passengers, an adult and two juveniles.

Reid also presented a fraudulent registration for the vehicle and was found in possession of several rounds of ammunition and two loaded firearms.

He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm possession of an ammunition magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child as well as vehicle and traffic violations.

Police also charged Reid with attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with an incident in Rondout Gardens on May 6. On that date, he is alleged to have fired a handgun from a vehicle at one or more persons and to have fled the area immediately.

He was developed as a suspect following the shooting and the weapon used in the incident is believed to have been recovered during the traffic stop.

The matter remains under investigation and additional charges are also possible, police said.
