NEW YORK – The US Environmental Protection Agency is providing funding for two area school districts to purchase a total of six all-electric school buses.

The Chatham Central School District will receive five buses paid for by the EPA while the Monticello Central School District will receive one new bus.

Monticello Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Evans said this will be the first all-electric bus in their fleet, which now totals 60 vehicles – 40 diesel, 17 gas, and three hybrids.

“We will be required to, like all other school districts across the state effective July 2027. School districts will no longer be able to purchase any gas-powered buses and effective 2035, all school buses will need to be electric at that time,” he said.

Other school districts in the state to receive funding for all-electric buses include the Adirondack Central School District, receiving three buses; Fabius-Pompey Central School District, receiving five buses; Naples Central School District, receiving two buses; and Norwood-Norfolk Central School District, receiving one bus.
