KINGSTON – A 44-year-old Malden man has been sentenced to five to 15 years in state prison for his conviction of arson that he committed as part of his ongoing domestic abuse.

On June 25, 2022, a few days after calling off his engagement to the victim, Timothy Benzenhoefer completely burned to the ground the home where the victim and her two young daughters lived in Saugerties.

Two days earlier, he was removed from the house after a court order was issued to protect the victim and her children from the abuse and destruction by Benzenhoefer.

He had previously struggled with significant alcohol and domestic abuse problems but showed no serious commitment to recovery or rehabilitation despite intervention by ORACLE and other programs. His efforts at recovery resulted in a relapse into alcohol and domestic abuse.
