Bear cubs climb a backyard tree one year ago

TOWN OF NEWBURGH – One year ago, a mamma bear and her three cubs emerged from the woods on Gould Place in the Cronomer Valley section of the Town of Newburgh.

The three cubs climbed a tree in the backyard of Christine Furey’s home.

With the warmer weather, they are now back, one year bigger, and still looking for something to eat.

Furey almost came face to face with the mother on her deck.

“What was really funny about yesterday was how quiet they were. She was able to just come to those stairs behind me. I never heard her, and quiet as a mouse, too. Once it was over it was kind of cool; when it happened it wasn’t,” she said.

Last spring when the cubs climbed a tree, Furey said the mamma circled her house until they came down, and she lumbered away with her children in tow.
