NEW HAMPTON – The defunct Orange County Landfill in New Hampton, once listed in the state superfund program site, has been reclassified as a Class 4 site that no longer presents a significant threat to public health and/or the environment. That ruling came from the State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The landfill was operational from 1974 to 1992.

Material from an existing leachate system constructed in November 1995 is taken offsite to a municipal treatment plant.

Contaminants of concern included tetrachloroethylene, solvents including methanol, ethanol, toluene and benzine, and acids including nitric, hydrofluoric and glacial acetic, and gypsum sludge toxic for lead.

The DEC said remedial actions have successfully achieved soil cleanup objectives for industrial use. Residual contamination in the groundwater and sediment is being managed under a site management plan.

The DEC now says remedial actions are complete and measures are in place to control the potential for coming in contact with residual contamination remaining at the site.
