BETHEL – A Sunday evening accident between two motorcyclists on Route 55 in the Town of Bethel claimed the life of one of the operators, State Police said.

Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Joseph Messina, 40, and William Bailey, 42, both from Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania, were traveling south on Route 55 when they collided.

Messina was operating a 2012 Harley Davidson and Bailey was operating a 2003 Harley Davidson.

Troopers said Bailey was ejected from his motorcycle and struck a utility pole.

Despite life-saving measures performed by members of the White Lake Fire Department, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Messina was transported to Garnet Medical Center Catskills in Harris where he was treated and released.

During the investigation, it was determined that Messina was impaired by alcohol and was charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation.

He was released on an appearance ticket pending a future court appearance.

The incident remains under investigation.
