NEWBURGH – Monday morning’s shooting in the City of Newburgh left one person dead at the scene and another in critical condition at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital.

Both were employees of RUPCO, the housing development and rehabilitation organization.

A statement from RUPCO officials said Shane Lawrence was killed and Richard Herring remains in the hospital.

Mayor Torrance Harvey addressed the latest incident.

“Gun violence is never the solution to a temporary issue or problem and we are very, very troubled by this particular situation, and we are hoping that the public will speak up and speak out and provide law enforcement with information to solve this case,” he said.

Authorities said the incident occurred around 8:40 a.m. in the area of Lander and Farrington Street.

Names of the victims were not released by the city.

Anyone who may have information about the latest violence is asked to call Newburgh City detectives at 845-569-7509. Callers can remain anonymous.

“The entire RUPCO team is saddened by this tragic event, as we turn now to offer support to the victims’ families as well as to each other, the RUPCO statement said. “One of our colleagues is no longer here and another faces a daunting recovery. Our deepest sympathies go out to their loved ones during this devastating time.”
