TOWN OF ULSTER – A Saugerties man has been charged with arson and insurance fraud for reporting his car stolen and set on fire so he could college the insurance money.

State Police also charged William Duryea, 27, with falsely reporting an incident to law enforcement.

On December 28, 2022, Duryea reported to work at 10 p.m. at the Ulster Service Area on the Thruway. At about 11:20 p.m., he received a call from Kingston Police telling him his vehicle was found on fire in Hasbrouck Park.

He told them he left his keys in the car when he went to work ad someone must have stolen it.

During the investigation, troopers learned that Duryea did not drive to work that evening. He had his vehicle burned and filed an insurance claim.

Duryea was arraigned on the insurance fraud and false incident report and released on his own recognizance. He was also issued an appearance ticket for the arson charge and is due in Kingston City Court at a later date.
