Man charged with vehicular manslaughter in August 2022 crash

TOWN OF CRAWFORD – A 33-year-old Bloomingburg man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter in connection with a fatal car crash at the intersection of Routes 302 and 17K in Bullville that occurred on August 19, 2022.

Crawford Police Chief Dominick Blasko said an investigation, with assistance from the State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit, found that a 1995 Chevrolet van driven by Shawn Dehaan, 33, was traveling eastbound on Route 17K when it failed to stop for a red light and entered the intersection with Route 302 striking two other vehicles.

Jeffery Griffin, 39, of Pine Bush, a front seat passenger in one of the vehicles, was transported to Garnet Hospital in the Town of Wallkill where he died from his injuries.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office presented the results of the investigation to the grand jury which indicted Dehaan on the vehicular manslaughter charge.

On Friday, March 24, Crawford arrested Dehaan and charged him with vehicular manslaughter and driving while ability impaired by drugs.

He was turned over to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office pending arraignment.
