ALBANY- The beginning of this year’s legislative session marked the return of “old Albany” in the state capitol.  School groups, activists, and lobbyists have returned to fill the halls of “the people’s house” as nearly every pandemic restriction has been lifted, but one pandemic-related protocol remains in place—limited press access on the Assembly floor.  Assemblyman Anil Beephan (R-Fishkill) wants to see that change.

Last week, Beephan supported a resolution that would grant credentialed news reporters access to the assembly floor during session proceedings.  This resolution would restore pre-pandemic procedures in the chamber that previously allowed reporters to interact with elected officials to discuss bills, floor votes, and other legislative efforts.

The resolution, supported by Beephan and other Assembly Republicans, was voted down by Assembly Democrats in a party-line vote, who hold a supermajority in the chamber.  It is unclear whether Democrats, who control the chamber, ever intend to allow the press to return to the Assembly floor.

“The press is the eyes, ears, and voice of democracy, constantly scanning and reporting on the actions of those in power, informing and empowering the people to hold their leaders accountable and participate in shaping the direction of their society,” said Beephan.  “I am dismayed that the Assembly majority voted against a resolution to allow the press back into the people’s house last week.  Members of the press should have unfettered access to the chamber and its halls to ensure our residents remain informed and hold public officials accountable for their actions on the floor.”

Current Assembly rules allow for members to invite guests to the floor, and there are no COVID-related capacity restrictions, vaccination requirements, or masking requirements for the chamber.  “As the majority touts being the trendsetters for the nation, this action sets a concerning precedent,” concluded Beephan.
