Shootings down in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie

ALBANY – The number of shooting incidents involving injury and persons struck by gunfire declined in the first two months of the year in both the cities of Poughkeepsie and Newburgh.

The statistics were reported by the State Division of Criminal Justice Services.

In the period of January and February of this year, there was only one reported shooting incident involving injury in Newburgh, down from three during the same period last year. One person was shot during the same period, down from four in 2022.

In Poughkeepsie, there was one shooting incident involving injury in the first two months of this year, compared with three the previous year. One person was shot during the same period this year, compared with three previous year.

The DCJS reported 22 shooting incidents involving injury in all of 2022 in Poughkeepsie, down from 25 in 2021. That’s a 12 percent decline.
Persons hit by bullets in 2022 in Poughkeepsie totaled 27, down from 29 the previous year. That’s a seven percent drop.

Individuals killed by gun violence in Poughkeepsie in 2022 totaled four, compared with one in 2021.

In 2022, there were 23 reported incidents of shootings involving injury in Newburgh, compared with 25 in 2021, a drop of eight percent.

There were 30 case of persons struck by bullets in 2022, down from 32 the year before, a six percent decline.

In 2022, three people were killed by gun violence in Newburgh, up from one in 2021, the state agency reported.
