TOWN OF WALLKILL – The six-month moratorium on building warehouse/distribution centers in the Town of Wallkill will expire in about a month, but if Supervisor George Serrano has his way, he would like to extend it.

Serrano says the town should wait until a study of town development is completed.

“I would like to keep it another six months because the master plan committee is still reviewing and I want to make sure that I get the proper information from them so that we can implement any changes that need to be done to move the town forward in a positive direction,” he said. “Maybe there is an area where a warehouse/distribution center should be at.”

The issue that brought the moratorium to the forefront was a proposal by the owners of the Orange County Fairgrounds who want to sell the property to a warehouse developer.

In that case, Serrano said, that property is not zoned for that purpose.

A majority of the five-member town board would have to approve an extended moratorium for it to become law.
