KINGSTON – Childcare centers in the City of Kingston may now request 15-mile-per-hour speed zones following approval this month by the common council.

Those centers that meet state criteria can now request, through the city engineer’s office, a 15 mph zone from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Mayor Steven Noble said that concept was one of the solutions recommended by residents following a cyclist death near the Y. “We felt that, because this crash happened in a childcare area, creating a reduced speed zone is one action we could take to help improve the safety of all,” he said.

Heidi Kirschner, Kingston YMCA executive director, said the new action “will significantly improve safety on Pine Grove Avenue for Y families that drop youth off for childcare and camp.”

She said it will also “making coming and going from the Fuller/YMCA campus safer for all our teens and adult pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.”
