GOSHEN – A 37-year-old Newburgh man has been sentenced in Orange County Court on Monday to 20 to 22 years in state prison on drug possession and perjury charges.

Sherlan Simpson was caught on surveillance video tossing a backpack out a car window as he was chased by state troopers into the Woodbury Common parking lot on January 6, 2021. That backpack contained two kilos of cocaine with an estimated street value of $200,000. DNA analysis of the contents of the bag matched Simpson.

When evidence was presented to the grand jury five days later, Simpson chose to testify on his own behalf, took the oath to tell the truth and denied that he ever had a backpack in his car or threw it from the vehicle.

“A huge quantity of drugs was intercepted by the police in this case before it could be spread throughout our community,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “The lengthy and appropriate sentence imposed on his defendant reflects the serious nature of his crimes and criminal history.”

Hoovler credited State Police and Woodbury Town Police with making the arrest and investigating the case.
