VAILS GATE – In recent weeks the Vails Gate Fire Department began the official updates to their 65-year-old outdated headquarters on Blooming Grove Turnpike.  The much-needed construction will reduce the risk of injury related to the existing structure that is plagued by decay, electrical issues, crumbling blocks, and other hazards.  Two public referendums were approved by taxpayers to make the long-anticipated project a reality.

The $19 million price tag will pay for the construction of two buildings; one to house the rigs while the current house is demolished and the other, the main building will follow.  When both are completed, the first new building, measuring 3,990 square feet, will be used for maintenance and training purposes while the main structure, 22,000 square feet, will serve as the main firehouse.

The first approved bond, for $16 million, and the second $2 million bond are being supplemented by existing department funds.

Building one is expected to be completed in September of this year and the main structure will follow in November of 2024.

Thirty-nine-year department member and New Windsor Town Councilman is excited about the project.  “The new firehouse is projected to function for the next 75 plus years,” he said, adding “The membership has been planning this for the past seven to eight years and it finally came to life on February 22nd when the first shovel went into the ground.”

Asked if the construction will have an impact on the department’s ability to respond, Bedetti, who also serves as President of the Vails Gate Fire Company said “During construction, the Vails Gate Fire Department will remain ready to protect the New Windsor residents in our district,” while also expressing his gratitude to the taxpayers that approved the expenditure and continue to support the volunteers that make up the department.
