NEW YORK – Former President Donald Trump returned to social media this weekend, calling for protests over his possible arrest.  The former Leader of the Free World and declared Republican candidate for the office of President of the United States claims that he is going to be arrested on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, as a result of a years-long investigation into monies paid to buy silence from women who allegedly engaged in sexual acts with the thrice-married former President.

In a social media post, former President Trump, speaking in the third person, said “leading Republican candidate and former president of the United States will be arrested on Tuesday of next week,” despite no indication from prosecutors that his arrest is imminent.  In a veiled post reminiscent of January 6th, President Trump appealed to his supporters to stand up.  “Protest, take our nation back,” Trump said, in what appears to be a call to arms.

New York State Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox issued a statement on Saturday afternoon, denouncing the protest of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s inquiry into the former GOP torch-bearer.  Cox, the 76-year-old politico who previously led the state GOP from 2009 to 2019, and was re-elected this year, including the misspelling of “Manhattan” twice while supporting Trump.  “This is a blatant political scheme by Alvin Bragg to play to his liberal Manhatten base by smearing, tearing down, and demeaning former President Trump,” Cox said.  Chairman Cox continued to denounce Bragg’s investigation while appealing to Democrats by name-dropping the late Robert Morgenthau.  Mr. Morgenthau, a Democrat, at the time of his retirement in 2009, had been the longest-serving district attorney in the state, as the top prosecutor for the borough of Manhattan.  Chairman Cox said “Alvin Bragg has already abdicated his basic responsibilities by releasing criminals back onto the streets to wreak havoc on New York’s citizens and minority communities in particular. He has brought further disgrace to his office with this political game,” adding “The great Manhatten District Attorney Robert Morgenthau is turning over in his grave.

Michael Dupree, the Chairman of the Dutchess County Democratic Committee was non-plussed by the Cox statement.  Dupree, who resides in Hyde Park, the home of FDR, responded simply by saying “Ed Cox should know that no one is above the law, and he should know how to spell, too.”
