KINGSTON – In the wake of recent freight train derailments in other parts of the country, Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger said federal regulators must tighten restrictions on railroad companies.

In recent years there have been concerns about track and train car conditions in the Hudson Valley and Metzger said more must be done in Washington to minimize the likelihood of disasters.

“There is the maintenance of the tracks, the trestles; they don’t have enough maintenance staff, CSX, and they are really not doing the work that they need to be doing,” she said.

The county executive also said the railroad companies must also keep up maintenance on train cars.
