Possible rabid fox in Union Vale

TOWN OF UNION VALE – The Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health is alerting residents that a possibly rabid fox was spotted in the general vicinity of Oswego Road in the Town of Union Vale.

The fox was last seen on Tuesday, March 7 following an encounter with a resident.

People are reminded to avoid contact with wild animals. Do not approach and keep pets away as wild animals may be rapid.

The health department says if you see an animal exhibiting unusual or bold behavior like approaching people for food, attacking leashed pets  with owners, or chasing joggers or bikers, call the State Department of Environmental Conservation regional office at 845-256-3098.

If there is any physical contact between a wild animal and a person or pet, it should be reported to the county health department as soon as possible at 845-486-3404 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or at night or weekends at 845-431-6465.
