POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess Outreach (DO), a multi-service non-profit in Poughkeepsie has teamed with Nuvance Health to help treat chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, according to DO Executive Director Renee Fillette.  The announcement was made last week.  The new venture will include having a Nuvance nutritionist embedded at the Dutchess Outreach food pantry located at the Family Partnership Center on North Hamilton Street.

Nuvance is the parent company of Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.

The “Food as Medicine” program is designed to use food as an actual treatment for people with chronic illnesses, with the nutritionist helping the Nuvance patients choose the proper nutritional food from the DO pantry.  While the program targets those who are considered “food insecure”, all visitors to the pantry will be able to get advice on proper food selection, according to Fillette.

“The program also aids our local farms because Dutchess Outreach purchases a majority of the healthy foods from local farms,” said Fillette.
