HYDE PARK – Surrounded by hundreds of supporters on Wednesday night, longtime public servant Sue Serino officially declared her candidacy to be the next Dutchess County Executive.  Serino, a Republican, began her political career years ago as a councilwoman in the Town of Hyde Park.  Since beginning her public service, the successful real estate agent was elected to the Dutchess County Legislature prior to serving four terms as a New York State senator.

“There’s a lot of people that like to talk to you,” Serino said. “I like to listen and that’s how I’ve learned what needs to be done.”

Serino noted that her life story is more important to the needs of the people than her government experience.  Serino, prior to marrying attorney Mark Serino, was a single mother who was working as a waitress to support her son.  “I’m somebody who lived paycheck to paycheck – a single mom, a business owner – that  brought my business through a horrible recession.  We not only survived  – we thrived,” Serino said, speaking of her real estate business.  “I want to do the same thing for Dutchess County and we have a great foundation with the work that Marc Molinaro did for us that we can expand upon.”

Serino’s candidacy has been one of the most talked-about races since November, when she lost her senate re-election bid when a large portion of her district was shifted to Ulster County.  Other Republicans including Dutchess County Legislature Chairman Gregg Pulver and County Clerk Brad Kendall had both announced their interest in running for the seat but threw their support behind Serino late last year to help keep the seat controlled by the Republican Party.

East Fishkill Town Supervisor Nick D’Alessandro was interested in the Republican nomination and was seeking the GOP endorsement, despite party leaders encouraging him to support Serino.

On Wednesday night, D’Alessandro took the podium ahead of Serino and announced he is running for re-election in East Fishkill and encouraged the attendees to support Serino’s bid to lead the county.  He told Mid-Hudson News that he doesn’t need to run for county executive right away.  “I feel that I still have lots to accomplish in the Town of East Fishkill and my time will come eventually for me to be County Executive,” D’Alessandro said. “Sue Serino will be a wonderful county executive because she truly cares about helping people and that ultimately is the number one job of all of us public officials.”

Molinaro, who recently left Dutchess County after being elected to Congress, has fully endorsed Serino’s campaign and was present at Wednesday’s kickoff.
