HOPEWELL JUNCTION – Chip fab manufacturer onsemi officially took over the research and manufacturing facilities from GlobalFoundries on Friday with a ribbon cutting ceremony. US Senator Charles Schumer did the honors.

The 1,000 employees working for the former company have transitioned to onsemi as the company invests $1.3 billion to launch the nation’s only 12-inch power discrete image sensor fab.

Schumer told those gathered that his vision is for the U.S. to be on top of the chip fab game.

“My dream, my goal, and we’re getting there, is to make New York State and particularly the Hudson Valley and upstate New York the center of chip manufacturing and research for the country and even the world,” he said.

onsemi President Hassane El-Khoury said the facility “will produce chips that enable electric vehicles, EV charging and energy infrastructure.”
