TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – A heavy fire at a Main Street pizza place in Arlington put several fire departments to work on Wednesday morning minutes after 2 a.m. The blaze destroyed a pizza place and a neighboring three-story building with multiple apartments.
Dutchess County 911 received a call from a resident at one of the apartments at 784 Main Street to report the presence of smoke in the apartment that appeared to be coming from the first floor. At 2:06 a.m., a Town of Poughkeepsie police officer arrived at the scene and reported an active fire. The first arriving Arlington Fire Department crews were on the scene moments later and confirmed fire blowing through the rear of Tony’s Pizza Pit.
Several fire departments were called to the scene to fight the blaze while other departments were relocated to neighboring firehouses to provide additional coverage if needed.
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police closed Main Street between South Grand Avenue and Raymond Avenues.
With temperatures in the mid-20s, the water began freezing on the road surfaces, making it difficult for the first responders to maneuver. Town highway crews responded to the scene to cover the roadway with salt to prevent injuries.
At 6:30 a.m., Arlington firefighters were still on the scene extinguishing hot spots.
No injuries to first responders or civilians in the surrounding buildings were reported.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.
