Two highway fatalities – I-84 and Thruway

MID-HUDSON – A two-car crash on Interstate 84 in the Town of Wallkill on Sunday afternoon claimed one life, State Police said.

The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and two others were injured.

The crash led to traffic backups in the area.

Meanwhile, a late Saturday night accident between a Toyota Avalon and a tractor-trailer on the Thruway in the Town of New Paltz claimed the life of 63-year-old Darleen Halwick of Hurley, the sole occupant in the car.

Troopers said preliminary investigation determined that 43-year-old Carlos Nunes of Kearny, New Jersey was driving the rig southbound in the right lane when his truck was struck from behind.

Initially, Nunes that he had a flat tire and made a controlled stop on the right shoulder.

When he got out to look, he discovered the car had struck the rear of the trailer and had become lodged underneath it.

The impact of the crash claimed the life of Halwick, who was pronounced dead by the Ulster County Medical Examiner.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
