Shawangunk Supervisor John Valk Jr.

WALLKILL – Longtime Shawangunk Town Supervisor John Valk Jr. has announced that he will not seek re-election to the position he has held for the past 25 years.  His longtime commitment to public service includes spending seven years as a town councilman before being elected to the supervisor position.

During Valk’s tenure, the town underwent many infrastructure improvements that includes the hamlets of Walker Valley and Wallkill.

Supervisor Valk was emotional about the decision. “This is a very bittersweet announcement, but I do feel it’s time for me to step down and pass the reigns on to the next supervisor,” he said. “I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish over the years with the help of all of my different board members.”

The retiring supervisor cherishes the town he calls “home” and pointed toward his record when describing the southern Ulster County municipality.  “Shawangunk is, and always will be my home, and every decision that I made had the best interests of all our residents to make sure that they were as proud to call this town home as much as I am.”

In announcing his decision, Valk took a moment to thank everyone that he said “helped him along the way.”
